ASSIGNMENTS
Participation: 25 %
- Attendance in class(No more than three absences per semester)
- Participation in class discussion (including on-line, if desired)
- Coming to class having completed all readings for that day
- Completion of any in-class assignments (i.e., pop quizzes on readings)
Paper 1*Due: January 21* 5%
- Write a two to three page, typed, double-spaced essay on the following question: "How has your family history (or racial/ethnic identity), your life experience as a man or woman, and your socioeconomic background (perhaps as reflected in your workplace or school experience) influenced your environmental values and your relationship to nature?
Paper 2 *Due February 18*10 %
- Find an American cultural object (picture, T.V. commercial, thing, song, etc.) that depends upon the intertwining of femininity, masculinity, racial identity, or sexual orientation with images of nature. Write 2-4 pages (typed, double-spaced) analyzing the way in which these images are represented and what social and political implications you find in the message of the representation. You may be asked to discuss your cultural object in class.
Paper 3*Due on day your chosen readings are assigned*25 %
- One short paper (5 pages) which critically assesses the readings for one class session, compares their arguments and approaches, and isolates questions for class discussion. You may be asked to help facilitate class discussion on the day of the readings that you examine in your short paper.
There will be a sign-up sheet passed out in the second week of class, so look through the syllabus early and pick out those readings that you would like to write about for your paper. Keep in mind that you may revise this paper for your Paper #4, so plan accordingly.
Paper # 4 *Due 4:30, May 4, WST office*35 %
- A revision of the short paper that brings other class readings and outside research to bear, or a new research topic approved by the instructor (8-12 pages); OR designing a "teaching module" linked to the class Web page that presents an issue relevant to the class (written component 5 pages)
Internet assignment for extra credit *Due 4:30, May 4, on the Speakeasy Website*5%
- Either collecting images of nature or finding relevant Web links for the class page
