Current Research

My dissertation asks whether stepfather involvement with co-resident children differs in degree and/or style across cohabiting and married stepfamilies. I am using multiple nationally representative surveys to answer the question. My goal in analyzing survey data is to determine whether time and activities shared by stepfathers and co-resident stepchildren differ across cohabiting and marital relationships. The question has become an important one. A burgeoning stepfamily literature has suggested that married stepfathers are more involved than cohabiting stepfathers. There remains little evidence of differentiation, however, as most comparisons of cohabiting and married stepfamilies have not focused on father involvement, but rather on child well-being and outcomes. Moreover, social theories imply disparate relationships between marital status and stepfather involvement
