Current Research
My current research examines the impact of new prisons on the rural communities that often host them, with particular attention to local employment levels. The weight of the evidence, based on the work of others, suggests that prisons are no benefit to their host communities; often they even dampen employment growth. To extend this line of research I, with the guidance of Greg Hooks, have focused on prison privatization as something that may help to illuminate the nuances of this relationship.
