The capstone book will explore the patterns of women's movement activism in abortion, job training, prostitution, political representation between 1970s and 2000 as well as national priority issues of the 1990s in post industrial democracies (primarily in Western Europe and North America). The following RNGS members are working on the project: Joni Lovenduski, Marila Guadagnini, Amy Mazur, Joyce Outshoorn, and Birgits Sauer, with Dorothy McBride taking the lead. Overall, it is a study of processes of democratization—descriptions and assessments of the successes and failures of women's movement activists over three decades as they have sought to achieve their policy goals and open up policy making arenas. The first goal will be to present cross-issue findings of the role of women's policy agencies in assisting women's movement actors and to examine reasons for different outcomes. There will also be chapters delving into the implications of research results on our understanding of women's movements, gendering and framing in policy processes, representation of women, state feminism, and comparisons between qualitative and quantitative approaches. Working papers connected to the capstone project can be found in the document capstone workbook under working papers. Our aim is to produce a final manuscript for publication in Fall 2008.
