Division of Governmental Studies & Services

The Division of Governmental Studies and Services (DGSS) is a university outreach unit jointly supported by the College of Liberal Arts and WSU Extension. It serves the applied social science research needs of governmental agencies in Washington and the Pacific Northwest region. DGSS also provides support for basic research and grant-related work for faculty and graduate students of the Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice Program.

Institute for the Study of Intercommunal Conflict

Intercommunal conflicts form barriers to peace and human security. The Institute for the Study of Intercommunal Conflict promotes research and outreach activities that provide an understanding of the causes, escalation pathways, and consequences of intercommunal conflicts, as well as their resolution.

Thomas S. Foley Institute for Public Policy & Public Service

The Foley Institute was established at WSU in 1995 to honor the service of Thomas S. Foley, former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. Through a variety of programs, scholarships, and fellowships, the institute fosters cross-disciplinary research, education, and student participation in public policy and public service. The institute has a 3-fold mission:

  1. To enhance public affairs programming and education on campus (through events such as public policy forums, the coffee and politics series, public affairs lecture series, etc., that are free and open to the public).
  2. To catalyze public policy research and Congressional studies (through sponsorship of research conferences and interdisciplinary research groups and partnerships such as the WSU–ICU Partnership, ENSCOG, the Institute for the Study of Intercommunal Conflict, etc.).
  3. To foster student involvement in public policy and public service (through the institute's internship and fellowship programs in Congress, the state legislature, and various federal, state, and local agencies). 

Washington State Institute for Community Oriented Policing (WSICOP)

The mission of the Washington State Institute for Community Oriented Policing (WSICOP) is to broker relevant community policing training programs to community members, police, and/or other government officials that will provide technical assistance to law enforcement agencies, and to conduct research on the implementation and results of community oriented policing.

WSICOP is a joint effort of Washington State University, the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs, and the Washington Criminal Justice Training Commission. It serves as the vehicle for statewide implementation of community policing. WSICOP is centered at WSU Spokane, where it can electronically connect via interactive television equipped classrooms with any of the several Washington Higher Education Telecommunication System sites. 

Western Regional Institute for Community Oriented Public Safety (WRICOPS)

The Western Regional Institute for Community Oriented Public Safety (WRICOPS) provides regional training, develops training curriculum, and conducts on-site assessments by utilizing a training and leadership cadre (a team of local government officials, citizen representatives, and law enforcement professionals).

WRICOPS is a 5-state partnership of Idaho, Montana, South Dakota, Washington, and Wyoming involving Criminal Justice Training Commissions/Peace Officer Standards and Training organizations, police and sheriffs associations, and universities. As a national partnership model, WRICOPS is one of 27 university–practitioner collaborations funded by Congress, known as Regional Community Policing Institutes, and receives frequent visits of delegations from other states to learn from its success.

American Political Science Association

The leading professional organization for the study of political science, serving more than 15,000 members in over 80 countries.

Western Political Science Association

An association of more than 1,000 political scientists, its purpose is to promote the study and teaching of government and politics, to foster research, and to facilitate the discussion of public affairs. The association publishes the journal Political Research Quarterly.

International Studies Association (ISA)

The International Studies Association (ISA) was founded in 1959 to promote research and education in international affairs. With well over 4,000 members in North America and around the world, ISA is the most well-respected and widely-known scholarly association in this field. ISA cooperates with 57 international studies organizations in more than 30 countries, is a member of the International Social Science Council, and has nongovernmental consultative status with the United Nations. The association sponsors 5 professional journals of the highest quality in international relations:

  • International Studies Quarterly (ISQ) started in conjunction with the association as its flagship journal.
  • With a broad interdisciplinary and multinational perspective, the International Studies Review (ISR) tracks worldwide trends, synthesizing theory and literature in the field.
  • International Studies Perspectives (ISP) began publication in 2000 and is focused on teaching, research, and the state of the profession.
  • Foreign Policy Analysis (FPA) provides a peer-reviewed outlet for the highest quality academic research into the processes, outcomes, and theories of foreign policy.
  • And finally, our most recent journal, International Political Sociology (IPS), debuted this year as an interdisciplinary journal responding to the diversification of both scholarly interests and regional concerns in contemporary international studies.

International Society of Political Psychology (ISPP)

ISPP is an interdisciplinary organization representing all fields of inquiry concerned with exploring the relationships between political and psychological processes. ISPP's nearly 1,000 members include psychologists, political scientists, psychiatrists, historians, sociologists, economists, and anthropologists, as well as journalists, government officials, and others. The society is also international, with members from all regions of the world: the Americas, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. It publishes the highly respected journal Political Psychology.
