Call for Participation
New Submission Deadline: April 30!
The theme of this year's 2009 Plateau Conference, Naamí Tiičám, Naamí Waq’íšwit "Our Land, Our Life," reaffirms our ongoing commitment to celebrate and support research and advocacy promoting the indigenous cultures of the Columbia Plateau and greater Pacific Northwest. The conference theme explores how our human diversity, cultures, and languages are vitally linked to the Pacific Northwest landscape.
The Plateau Center for American Indian Studies at Washington State University invites the submission of presentation proposals on all aspects of research affecting indigenous cultures, particularly research relating to cultures of the Plateau and Pacific Northwest. The aim of the 2009 Plateau Conference is to open a cross-cultural dialogue and to raise awareness through research, advocacy, workshops, and cultural sharing.
The deadline for submitting a proposal is April 30, 2009. Notification of acceptance will be e-mailed May 1, 2009. We will consider early proposals with possible early acceptance notifications for those that require it. Oral presentations will be allotted 20 minutes with brief open discussions to follow. Group panels will be allotted 1–1.5 hours depending on the number of participants. Workshops will be allotted 1.5–3 hours depending on workshop needs.
Abstract Guidelines
Abstracts for individual presentations, group panels, posters, or workshops should be 150–200 words and should include the paper title, author(s), affiliation, and e-mail address. Abstracts should be sent by e-mail to Phillip Cash Cash, pasxapu@dakotacom.net, as an rtf or pdf attachment. If you anticipate any problems sending your abstract in this way, please contact the organizing committee. Please include the primary author's snail mail address and phone number in your e-mail. Special note: If your abstract contains language content and uses special diacritics beyond those commonly found in today's standard fonts, we ask that you provide us instructions on how best to handle your language representation needs.
In submitting a proposal, you are also asked to submit a brief biographical paragraph for use as an introduction and in the conference program. Presenters are responsible for their own registration, travel, lodging, meals not covered with the conference registration, and any other expenses associated with this conference.
A/V Equipment
Digital projectors, screens, and laptop computers can be available. If needed, please request with your abstract submission.
Our Languages Poster Slam!
At this year's conference, a special poster session will be held to support the vital language preservation work of tribal language programs, language institutes, language advocates, linguistics students, language apprentices, and fluent speakers throughout the Plateau, Pacific Northwest, and beyond. The goal of this special poster session is to allow language specialists to interact, exchange ideas, and generate a stronger sense of community across the Plateau and Pacific Northwest. Contact Barbara Aston regarding support available to Tribal Language Programs for producing the posters for exhibit. Deadline for submitting content information for the production of a poster for Tribal Language Programs is April 13, 2009.
Conference Publication
Conference coordinator Phillip Cash Cash is planning to co-edit a conference proceedings volume to be published in cooperation with the Plateau Center for American Indian Studies. His goal would be to publish this volume in 2010. To this end, Cash Cash would like to receive good quality, previously unpublished chapters which may or may not be based on papers presented at the 2009 conference or any of the previous years' conferences. More information about the scope of this volume will be made available nearer to the conference; in the meantime, the anticipated deadline for submission of chapters will be mid-year in 2009.
