Potter Scholarships
Professor Potter was an instrumental figure in the founding of the Department of Philosophy and a long-time instructor in a number of areas at what was then Washington State College. These scholarships honor his memory.

Several scholarships will be given to help defray tuition expenses of junior- and senior-level students.

Academic excellence (3.0 g.p.a. or greater) and proven interest in philosophy will be prime factors in the selection of recipients. Such excellence will be judged on the basis of the following:

  • A transcript of graded coursework
  • Demonstrated proficiency in writing -- not merely in correctness of mechanics but also in the ability to select, organize, and present ideas effectively
  • Recommendations from philosophy faculty members
  • Performance in philosophy classes

Financial need is normally not a consideration, and one need not be a philosophy major or minor to apply.

Decisions regarding the awarding of scholarships will be made by the Scholarship Committee of the Philosophy Department. See Dr. Harry Silverstein, Chair of the Scholarship Committee or DeeDee Torgeson, Administrative Manager, if you have any questions.

Application forms may be obtained by clicking here. Please fill out the form online and print, no handwritten forms will be accepted.

Application materials are due in the Department of Philosophy by March 21 for scholarships to be awarded for the following summer and for the academic year.
