Dr. Gerald Berthiaume is Director of the School of Music at Washington State University. He teaches studio piano lessons to undergraduate and graduate majors, minors and non-majors. His duties also include piano literature, chamber music and accompanying. In addition, he directs the SKE Piano Camp (Summer Keyboard Explorations) for high school students in the summer.
Dr. Berthiaume is a Professor of Music with tenure and has taught at WSU since joining the faculty in 1989. Prior to his appointment at WSU, Berthiaume served as Head of the Piano Area at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas for a period of 11 years.
Berthiaume has performed as soloist, accompanist and chamber musician both in the United States and abroad. In 1993, he won the United States Information Agency Artistic Ambassador Competition by competing at Stanford University. As a result, Berthiaume toured the Middle East presenting concerts at U.S. embassies and consulates, as well as for international schools and television.
Berthiaume has performed and lectured for national conventions of the Music Teachers National Association in Miami and Milwaukee, for the College Music Society in Chicago, for the Music Educators National Conference in San Antonio, and the Percussive Arts Society in San Antonio. He has served as accompanist for William Walker of the Metropolitan Opera (Columbia Artists Management Tour) and for James King of the Vienna State Opera.
Solo and chamber music performances by Berthiaume can be heard on several labels: Albany Records, Vienna Modern Masters, Arizona University Recordings and Northeastern University Recordings. Berthiaume has judged and adjudicated extensively. He was formerly the Chair of the Washington State Music Teachers Association Education Board.
