Performance Ensembles

Choral Ensembles

WSU Concert Choir (MUS 431/531) is our premiere auditioned choral ensemble. This is a mixed choir of about 36-48 singers who meet 4 times each week (M-T-W-Th at 2:10-3:00 p.m.) and perform approximately 3-5 times each semester at numerous events on campus and tour each spring.  The ensemble performs music from all periods and styles of music from the traditional to the experimental.  In May of 2016, the ensemble will travel to South Korea for a performance tour. University Singers (MUS 432) is a non-auditioned ensemble, although many singers choose to complete the choral auditions. This is a mixed choir of about 60+ singers who meet 3 times each week (M-W-F at 1:10-2:00 p.m.) and perform approximately 3 times each semester. Dean Luethi, conductor.

Madrigal Chamber Singers (MUS 433/533) is a select ensemble of 16-20 singers who perform in Renaissance costume and, traditionally perform music of the Renaissance and also other chamber music through musical history. The Madrigal Chamber Singers rehearse twice a week (T and Th 12:00 noon to 1:15 p.m.) and perform on campus approximately 5 times each semester, and tour through the state of Washington as well as other opportunities including performances in Italy, Russia, Arizona, and California. In May of 2016, the ensemble will travel with Concert Choir to South Korea for a performance tour. Lori Wiest, conductor.

VoJazz (MUS 439/539) is a select ensemble of 8-16 singers and a rhythm section who perform jazz and meets twice each week (T and Th 3:10–5 p.m.). The members of this ensemble learn about live sound production, solo singing, theory and improvisation. The group participates regularly in jazz festivals and maintains an active performance schedule both on and off campus. Dean Luethi, director.

Opera Workshop (MUS 428/528) is an auditioned organization. Fall semesters have typically been opera or musical theatre scenes in a workshop manner, allowing students varied performance opportunities and classroom knowledge regarding staging, makeup, costumes, set design, etc. Spring semesters alternate between musical theatre and opera productions. Recent productions include Die Fledermaus, Marriage of Figaro, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, and The Addams Family. Julie Wieck, director.
