Summer Keyboard Explorations

June 28 — July 3, 2015

Grades 7-12

For the 26th consecutive year, middle school and high school students can work with award-winning Washington State University faculty to study classical piano, jazz piano/improvisation, and organ. With a limited number of students, Summer Keyboard Explorations offers students the opportunity to work with different faculty one-on-one each day, thus sending them home at week's end with a variety of information and different views about how they can improve their playing. In addition to a faculty concert, SKE features a guest artist who will perform a concert and give a master class to the students. The week's events culminate in a student concert that includes ensemble playing, a highlight of many student's experience at SKE!

Camp Activities and Studies:

SKE is excited to bring a guest artist to work with students every summer.

Faculty will offer individual studio lessons in classical piano as well as a choice of organ, jazz piano, and improvisation. Students will also participate as a group in masterclasses on solo performance literature, technique, and ensemble playing. The faculty will assess the playing level of students upon arrival at camp in order to place them in appropriate ensembles.

During the week, students will have time to practice, relax, use the University Recreation Center, and participate in evening programs. The faculty and counselors will provide 24-hour supervision of the campers. Responsible camp counselors will stay in the dormitory with all the boarding students.

Students should bring at least three pieces to study:
  • one ready to perform in the final concert
  • two that are in working progress
2015 Guest Artist

SKE is excited to welcome guest artist Dr. Scott Holden of Brigham Young University, where he is Associate Professor and department chair of keyboard performance.
