June 29 — July 4, 2008
Grades 7-12
For the 18th consecutive year, middle school and high school students will work with award-winning Washington State University faculty to study classical piano, jazz piano, organ, and improvisation. With a limited number of students, Summer Keyboard Explorations is the only camp in the region in which faculty work one-on-one with sdifferent students each day, thus sending them home at week's end with a variety of information and different views about how they can improve their playing. SKE will feature guest artists who will perform a concert and give a master class to the students. In addition, the WSU piano faculty will also be featured in performance during the week.
Camp Activities and Studies:
Faculty will offer individual studio lessons in classical piano as well as a choice of organ, jazz piano, and improvisation. Students will also participate as a group in master classes on solo performance literature, technique, music literature/theory and ensemble playing. The faculty will assess the playing level of students upon arrival at camp in order to place them in appropriate ensembles.
During the week, students will have time to practice, relax, use the University Recreation Center, and participate in evening programs. The faculty and counselors will provide 24-hour supervision of the campers. Responsible camp counselors will stay in the dormitory with all the boarding students.
Students should bring at least three pieces to study:
one ready to perform in the final concert, and two that are in working progress.
Dates:
Participants arrive and move into the residence hall on Sunday, June 29th. All boarding students will be provided dinner on Sunday evening and an orientation to the camp. Commuting students will join the boarding campers and receive the camp schedule on Monday morning, June 30th. The closing concert is Friday, July 4th, beginning at 1:00 pm . The camp ends at the conclusion of the concert.
Cost:
$400 residential (includes instruction, room and board, one SKE t-shirt, and special evening events.)
