Cougar String Camp

June 24 — 29, 2012

Grades 7-12

Camp Activities and Studies:

Violinists, violists, cellists and bassists will work with Washington State University faculty to improve their musical skills in a variety of ways.  String students will have the opportunity to participate in orchestra, jazz improvisation, fiddling, string techniques class, music theory class, master classes and chamber music (string quartets and trios).

The string camp will enjoy recreational activities.  Students will use the WSU Recreational Center as well as participate in fun evening activities.  The faculty and counselors will provide 24-hour supervision of the campers.  Responsible counselors will stay in the dormitories with all the boarding campers. Once again the WSU piano camp, Summer Keyboard Explorations, will be run in conjunction with Cougar String Camp.

Dates & Times:

Participants arrive and move into the residence hall on
Sunday, June 24th. All boarding and commuting students will be provided dinner on Sunday evening and an orientation to the camp followed by the first rehearsals.

The closing concert is Friday, June 29th, beginning at 1:00 pm.  The camp ends when the concert finishes, around 3:30.

Cost:
  • $425 residential (includes instruction, room and board, camp shirt, and special evening events)
  • $300 commuter (includes instruction, lunches, camp shirt, and special evening events)
  • Early registration discounted price (by May 18th):
    Residential — $415, Commuting — $290
Scholarships:

There are three types of scholarships available at Cougar String Camp:

  • The Quartet Fellowship Competition Scholarship
  • The new Carrabba Violins Inc. Scholarship
  • The general scholarship based on merit and/or need.

The Quartet Fellowship Competition Scholarship is for pre-formed quartets.  The members of the winning group receive all expenses paid scholarships.

The Carrabba Violins Inc. Scholarships, donated by Carrabba Violins » of Seattle are partial or full scholarships for advanced students based on talent and/or need.

Application Deadline:

Application forms and fees must be received by May 25, 2012. To receive the early registration discount, you must register by May 18.  Apply early to reserve your place. Please print and fill out the forms below and include them with your application.

Optional:

You may include a recording to insure that you are placed in a chamber group and an orchestra that fits your level.  Please record:

  1. A scale of your choice (one, two or three octaves), played twice, a slow version and a fast version.
  2. Two minutes of a piece of your choice.

If you don't send a recording, then we will attempt to place you using the information on your registration form.  Recordings will not be returned.
