Choral Opportunities

For High School Students

The Vocal/Choral faculty at Washington State University offer many educational opportunities for high school choral/vocal students to grow and excel in music.

During October of each year, WSU sponsors the Educational Choral Festival. This festival is meant to excite, encourage, and educate students, developing a spirit of camaraderie and commitment early in the school year. Choirs prepare 2-3 choral selections to be performed for 4 nationally respected clinicians who are effective motivators in the field of choral music. Following the performance, the choirs meet with one of the clinicians to work on music and to set realistic, achievable goals during the school year. The choral director also has the opportunity to talk with the clinician in a private conference.

Morning and afternoon workshops featuring vocal production and vocal jazz style and repertoire with WSU faculty will be presented for both students and teachers as an opportunity to explore and share new ideas. A 5:00pm choral concert, featuring the WSU Concert Choir and Madrigal Chamber Singers, as well as high school choirs heard during the day, will conclude the festival. Each participating choir receives hand-written comments from the clinicians, audio and video tapes of the performance, a computer print-out of the goals and objectives discussed during the goal-setting segment, and a certificate of participation in the festival.

In March and April, the WSU Concert Choir and University Singers invite high school choral ensembles to join them in an evening of choral music. This Invitational Concert series allows the high school choirs to perform on the university stage and listen to other high schools.

The Vocal/Choral faculty are available to work with your choir throughout the academic year. Schedule a clinic or master class with one or more of our world class faculty. Bring your choirs and soloists to WSU's School of Music for high quality, educational music experiences.
