Dr. Lori J. Wiest, Festival Director

The Vocal/Choral Area within the School of Music sponsors the annual Educational Choral Festival at Washington State University each fall designed to assist high school and junior high/middle school programs in providing an early, motivational opportunity for musical growth in a non-competitive, positive environment. The Educational Choral Festival is meant to excite, encourage, and educate students, developing a spirit of camaraderie and commitment. As an early festival, we offer the opportunity to receive feedback from respected clinicians who will help identify technical/expressive projects, involve your students in setting goals for the year, and provide real contact time with you and your choir.

Festival Activities

Each participating choir has the opportunity to perform in Kimbrough Concert Hall and work exclusively with one of our clinician for 40 minutes in the privacy of their own rehearsal room. Your singers will be encouraged to try new ideas and work towards high musical standards and towards their goals. Each director will also be able to meet privately with his/her choir's clinician. This has been a useful time to discuss matters from classroom management to new ideas on vocal technique and choral literature.

Following your performance and clinic, each participating choir will receive hand-written comments from the clinicians, recordings of your performance, a computer printout of goals and objectives discussed during your clinic, and a certificate of participation in the Festival.

In addition to the personalized clinic your choir will receive at the Choral Festival, other opportunities for learning and musical growth are available. Throughout the Festival day, you and your students can attend the performances of other participating choirs and attend the exciting performances that are offered by the WSU voice faculty and students. At 5:00 p.m., the concluding Festival Concert, featuring the WSU Concert Choir and Madrigal/Chamber Singers as well as selected participating choirs, will take place in Bryan Concert Hall.

Date and Time

The WSU Choral Festival will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2014. Performances typically begin around 9:00 a.m. in Kimbrough Concert Hall and continue throughout the day. The concluding concert featuring WSU Concert Choir, Madrigal Chamber Singers, and select festival choirs will be held in Bryan Hall Theatre, across the street, at 5:00 p.m. The concert will conclude around 6:30 p.m.
