Choral Ensembles
WSU Concert Choir our premiere auditioned choral ensemble. This is a mixed choir of about 40-48 singers who meet 4 times each week (M-T-W-Th at 2:10-3:00 pm) and perform approximately 3-5 times each semester. Lori Wiest, conductor.
University Singers a non-audition-requirement for this ensemble, although many singers do go through the choral auditions. This is a mixed choir of about 60+ singers who meet 3 times each week (MWF at 1:10-2:00 pm) and perform approximately 3 times each semester. John Weiss, conductor.
Madrigal Singers a select ensemble of 20 singers who perform in Renaissance costume and, traditionally perform music of the Renaissance and also other chamber music through musical history. The Madrigal Singers perform on campus approximately 5 times each semester, and tour through the state of Washington as well as other opportunities including performances in Italy, Russia, Arizona, and California. They produce the Annual Madrigal Dinner, where the singers sing, act, and dance in Elizabethan character, here on campus in December to sold out audiences. Lori Wiest, conductor.
VoJazz a select ensemble of 8-16 singers and a rhythm section who perform jazz. The members of this ensemble learn about live sound production, solo singing, theory and improvisation. The group participates regularly in jazz festivals and maintains an active performance schedule both on and off campus Jennifer (Scovell) Parker, director.
Opera Workshop an auditioned organization. Fall semesters have typically been opera or musical theatre scenes in a workshop manner, allowing students varied performance opportunities and classroom knowledge regarding staging, makeup, costumes, set design, etc. Spring semesters alternate between musical theatre and opera productions. Recent productions include the opera Marriage of Figaro of Mozart and Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd. Julie Wieck, director.
Crimson Revue is a high-energy show ensemble consisting of 6-10 singers with a rhythm section (piano, bass, guitar, drums) and horns (trumpet, sax, trombone). This ensemble performs all types of contemporary music including Motown, Country, Rock, Musical Theatre, and Top Forty. Students in the ensemble have the opportunity to sing, dance, choreograph, write and arrange music. Crimson Revue provides hands on experience for anyone interested in the pop music industry.
