Audition Requirements

For Admission to Graduate Study in Music

Prospective graduate students must have earned a baccalaureate degree in music from an accredited college or university.

All applicants must complete an audition prior to admission. When possible, the applicant should audition and be personally interviewed on the WSU campus. Tape recordings may be submitted in lieu of personal audition. In addition, music manuscripts, video tapes and other supporting evidence of preparedness for particular coursework within the master's program should be submitted for evaluation.

Entering graduate students are required to take diagnostic placement examinations in theory, music history and literature. These examinations are used to help plan the student's course of study, including the remedying of deficiencies.

The keyboard audition or submitted tape recording should demonstrate a high level of playing (solo, accompanying, chamber music) in music from different periods. Applicants will also be asked to sightread. Please contact piano faculty to arrange an audition on campus.

Please note: Consideration for graduate teaching assistantships in class piano, pedagogy, and accompanying will only be given to applicants who perform a live audition and interview on campus.

See information on teaching assistantships and stipends.
