Summer Fellow Program

The Thomas S. Foley Institute for Public Policy and Public Service is pleased to announce the seventh annual Summer Fellow Award for College of Liberal Arts graduate students. There will be one award of $2,500 for the summer of 2008. The successful candidate must be currently enrolled in a College of Liberal Arts Ph.D. program at WSU and must submit a written proposal.

The intent of the award is to: (1) provide recognition and financial support for WSU Ph.D. students who are pursuing original, substantive research projects that focus on public policy issues or problems, and (2) to advance a student's progress toward completion of the Ph.D. degree.

A successful proposal will meet the following criteria:

  1. Describes the significance of an ongoing research project for deepening our understanding of a public policy issue or problem of contemporary importance.
  2. Describes the scholarly impact of an ongoing research project, noting how this work has added to the advancement of a particular field of study.
  3. Describes how the proposed research project fits into a planned program of study, and how it will help advance progress toward completion of the Ph.D.

Supporting Documentation

Include a transcript (unofficial photocopies or downloaded Degree Audit Reports are acceptable) of your graduate-level course work and a current curriculum vitae.

Include 2 letters of recommendation from faculty members familiar with your academic work.

Proposals should not exceed 4 pages (typed and double-spaced with standard margins) and should be submitted to the Thomas S. Foley Institute at 401 Johnson Tower on or before 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4, 2008.

Of the total award, $500 is for books, supplies, transportation, and other field research expenses. There are no restrictions on what the remaining funds ($2,000) may be used for. Award recipients must provide a written, publication-ready research report to the Foley Institute by October 31, 2008. The institute will disburse the funds in the following fashion: $1,500 at the time of the award decision, $500 (for books, supplies, travel, etc.) upon presentation of receipts, and the final $500 upon receipt of the research report and a 500-word summary of the project (with a photo if possible) for inclusion in the Foley Institute Report.
