"Historicizing Poe at the Turn of the Century"
This review essay contextualizes and considers the new Historical Guide to Edgar Allan Poe, edited by J. Gerald Kennedy. Together with an "Introduction," "Brief Biography," "Bibliographical Essay," and "Illustrated Chronology," contributors offer essays on Poe and publishing, gender relations, sensationalism, and privacy. The reviewer generally applauds the work but finds its historicism skewed in favor of studying prescriptive discourse rather than practice, and language to the exclusion of materiality.
