ESQ: A Journal of the American Renaissance

Manuscript Submissions

New Submissions Now Being Considered

The editors of ESQ invite submission of scholarly articles on any aspect of nineteenth-century American literature. In general, ESQ's readership expects original articles with well-developed arguments that are thoroughly grounded in current scholarship and relevant critical conversations. At the same time, even the most probative work should provide clear, persuasive, and fresh contributions to the field. Manuscript submissions may vary in length from 20 to 60 pages; while monographs are welcome, subject matter and treatment should fully justify the extended argument. Unrevised dissertation chapters, for example, are not likely to meet with success.

Electronic submissions are preferred and should be provided in Rich Text or Microsoft Word format; send by email attachment to the Editors at esq@wsu.edu. Print submissions should include two copies of the typescript as well as provisions for the return of one copy, if desired; address to the Editors , ESQ, Department of English, Washington State University, Pullman, Washington 99164-5020. In aid of ESQ' s commitment to double-blind review, the author's name should not appear on the essay itself. Time of report is two to four months.

Upon acceptance, contributors are asked to submit final versions that conform to The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition (for convenience, consult Turabian's Manual, 6th edition, chapter 9).
