The Department of Psychology has developed a human psycho-physiological lab specifically for undergraduate use, the only lab of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. Utilizing new high-tech monitoring equipment purchased for the undergraduate lab, students execute research projects they initiate.

A master's degree track offered by the American Studies Program is the first in the country to combine multicultural studies with multimedia studies. "Our goal," said T.V. Reed, professor of English and American studies, "is to help make the Internet more user-friendly for low-income people, rural people, and people of color."

Faculty in the Department of Sociology are world-renowned in the areas of environmental sociology and social psychology. The department is in the top third of graduate programs ranked by the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences. In 2004 the department received the DuBois-Johnson-Frazier Award, the only time the prestigious award has been presented to an entire department instead of an individual sociologist.
