CLA Food Drive Helps Local Residents Have a Happy Holiday
By Phyllis Shier, College of Liberal Arts
Due to the generosity of CLA faculty and staff, Whitman County residents struggling from the economic downturn didn't go hungry this past holiday season.
CLA departments and administrative units raised a grand total of $5,200 in cash and food for the Community Action Center's December food bank, representing an approximately 30-percent increase from the college's 2009 total. (Food donations are assigned a per-pound dollar value by the Community Action Center.)
Special thanks go to the Department of English for raising almost half of that total, bringing in $2,487 in goods. At the holiday party, 20 tickets to the January 16 women's basketball game against Stanford were awarded to the English department for their outstanding food-raising effort!
