Joy's research interests include critical race, gender, and feminist theories, and the representations of race, ethnicity, gender, class, and sexuality in popular culture as well as exploring their intersections. She joined the American Studies graduate program at W.S.U.-Pullman after earning a Master's degree in four-field Anthropology (with an emphasis in Cultural Anthropology) and a B.A. in Psychology and Social Behavior. Her previous research projects include fieldwork on the Obon festival as well as the Nisei (second-generation Japanese Ameicans) who came of age during the Second World War.

She is currently teaching Comparative Ethnic Studies (CES) 101. Joy has previously taught Ethnic Studies courses, including The Ethnic Family, Ethnic Groups in the U.S. and Contemporary Ethnic America.
