WSU Asia Program Hosts Contemporary China Series

With funding from the National Committee on US–China Relations, the WSU Asia Program hosted 3 speakers on Contemporary China during 2006–2007. Professor Andrew Wilson (U.S. Naval War College) spoke on "China's National Security Outlook and Defense Modernization" (program), Professor Susan Whiting (University of Washington) spoke on "The Rule of Law in China" (program), and David Fridley (Berkeley National Labs) spoke on "China: Energy Economy and the World" (program).


WSU Asia Program Sponsors Spokane K-12 Teacher Training Workshop

In collaboration with the University of Washington's East Asian Resource Center, the Asia Program sponsored a teacher training workshop at WSU's Spokane campus entitled "U.S.–Asia Relations in Historical Perspective" in April 2007 (program). Asia Program faculty Noriko Kawamura and David Pietz participated on the program with other Asia experts from the Pacific Northwest. Twenty-five teachers from the region participated in the program.


WSU Asia Program Completes Asia Program Excellence Awards Endowment Fund

In March 2007, the Asia Program completed the raising of $25,000 to establish an annual set of awards to reward exemplary Asian studies students. Each year the endowment will provide funds to award the Asia Program Best Paper Award, an Asia Program Scholarship Award, and Asia Program Outstanding Senior Award. Thanks are due to the many individuals who contributed to this endowment.


WSU Asia Program Certificates Approved

In spring 2007, the WSU Faculty Senate approved 2 certificate programs developed by the WSU Asia Program. The 2 certificates are: Certificate in East Asian Studies for College of Business Majors, and the Certificate in East Asian Studies for College of Engineering and Architecture Majors.


WSU Asia Program Hosts Executive Conference: "Managing the U.S.–China Relationship"

On September 13, 2006, the Asia Program, in conjunction with the Spokane World Affairs Council and the Spokane International Trade Alliance, hosted a 3-part program featuring Hank Levine (U.S. Department of Commerce), Joe Borich (Washington State China Relations Council), and David Pietz (WSU Asia Program). The 3 programs were:

  1. Executive Round Table: "The Future of US–China Trade"
  2. Seminar: "Opportunities and Costs: Trading with China"
  3. Keynote Address: "The China Trade and America's Foreign Policy"

WSU Asia Program Sponsors Spokane K-12 Teacher Training Workshop

First Columbia Valley Undergraduate Asian Studies Research Symposium Held at WSU

In April 2006, the WSU Asia Program hosted the first Columbia Valley Undergraduate Asian Studies Research Symposium. Over 30 students from WSU, Central Washington University, Gonzaga University, Whitman College, and WSU Vancouver presented their research to peers and faculty mentors (program).


ASPAC program coverWSU Hosts ASPAC Conference

The 2006 Asian Studies on the Pacific Coast (ASPAC) Conference was held June 16–18 on the campus of Washington State University. This was the regional conference of the Association of Asian Studies and attracted approximately 120 participants from 34 academic institutions, including 7 international universities.

Professor Attends Summer Workshop

Professor Marina Tolmacheva was selected for participation in the University of Alaska, Anchorage, summer faculty development workshop "Russia in Asia" (May 2005).
