American Choral Music Festival
The American Choral Music Festival, funded through a $25,000 competitive grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, will coincide with the Festival of Contemporary Art Music, February 7–9, 2008. It includes:
- A new commissioned work for the WSU Concert Choir by Charles Argersinger and its premiere performance at the Faculty Composer Concert on Thursday, February 7, at 8:00 p.m.
- Workshops and open rehearsals on Friday, February 8, and Saturday, February 9, with the WSU Concert Choir, WSU Madrigal Singers, UI Vandaleers, UI University Chorus, and WSU Wind Symphony with guest composer and conductor Eric Whitacre.
- A 3:00 p.m. concert on Saturday, February 9, featuring performances of American choral music.
- The culminating guest composer concert with Eric Whitacre at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 9.
- All concerts are in Bryan Hall Theatre and are free and open to the public.
In addition to the on-campus festival, the WSU Concert Choir will be utilizing the grant funding to take American choral music on tour, performing in schools around Washington. Musical selections will feature the work of established American composers Eric Whitacre, Dominick Argento, Robert Shaw, Alice Parker, Libby Larsen, Randall Thompson, Moses Hogan, Norman Luboff, and Aaron Copland.
The WSU Concert Choir and Madrigal Singers have a strong history of performing choral music by American composers and have been strong advocates of American and contemporary composers and performers in the Festival of Contemporary Art Music. They have recently worked with John Corigliano, Libby Larsen, Chen Yi, Morton Lauridsen, and Brent Pierce.
