Even the long-ago dead tell us things that the living can’t, and you can learn things through DNA that can’t come from other sources, says Dr. Kemp. For example, by examining DNA from a 10,000-year-old man’s tooth found in an Alaskan cave, Dr. Kemp shed new light into when humans came to the Americas. And, by using DNA to determine that most of the baby bodies buried under an Aztec temple were males, he and his Mexican colleagues will have new answers – and raise new questions – about that ancient society.
