Applying to the Graduate Program

How to Apply to the
M.A. or Ph.D. Progam

The graduate program in American Studies is currently being restructured. There is a hiatus on accepting applications for the 2010–2011 academic year.

Your interest is appreciated. Please revisit our Web site in the future, or notify us if you wish to be contacted with new information as it is available.

For Program in American Studies graduate information, please send email to amst@wsu.edu or call us at 509-335-1560.

The Program in American Studies M.A. and Ph.D. admission application deadline for fall 2009 admission is JANUARY 10, 2009. Applications received after that date will be considered only after early decisions are made.

The application process is now fully available online via the WSU Graduate School. The process is handled via CollegeNET.

Follow this link for online access to the Graduate School's application materials.

If you are an international student seeking information, please also follow this link for international enrollment.

There is a small application fee payable to the Graduate School. All applicants must complete all parts of the online application form, including information on whether or not you are seeking a teaching and/or a research assistantship.

****************************************************************************************************************

The Program in American Studies will evaluate your application, based on the following, in rough order of importance:

1) Writing Sample: a recent sample of scholarly or critical writing (15-20 pages).

2) A Statement of Purpose. Describe your intellectual areas of interest, and why you believe the Program in American Studies at WSU is a good place for you to pursue those interests. Also mention any foreign language preparation you have had as well as any teaching experience (if you are applying for a teaching assistantship).

3) Three Letters of Recommendation: Request letters on academic letterhead from persons capable of evaluating your qualifications for graduate study, professional potential and, if applying for a teaching assistantship, your abilities as a teacher. These will now be available to our evaluators in electronic format.

4) Academic Transcripts: Your most recent undergraduate and/or relevant graduate transcripts.

5) Neither the GRE exam or any other standardized test is a requirement for admission to the Program in American Studies at Washington State University. Students may choose to send such test results if they are taking them for the purposes of other applications.

International students: Please also have TOEFL scores sent to the WSU Graduate School (address above) directly from the Educational Testing Service. Non-native speakers of English who seek teaching assistantships must submit an audiocassette with a two-minute sample of improvised (not read) conversation demonstrating their abilities with spoken English.
