Preparing Leaders for a Rapidly Changing World

The college uniquely develops the liberal arts as a cornerstone of social and economic development, vitality, and sustainability and advances the central role of human, social, and cultural capital in effecting positive societal change.

In so doing, the college focuses on three major integrated/interdisciplinary themes that address collective global issues of cultural understanding, human health and well-being, and justice and sustainability.

Integrated ArtsCultural Understanding and Enhancing International and Intercultural Relations

People, ideas, creations, and goods move around the world more freely now than at any time in history. Yet across and within contemporary societies, ignorance and misunderstanding impair social, artistic, and economic development. Researchers and artists in the College of Liberal Arts:

  • Engage in initiatives to increase our understanding of specific cultures and subcultures.
  • Contribute creativity to cultural enhancement.
  • Reveal and transform systems that perpetuate inequality.
  • Improve our conceptions of (inter)national and (inter)cultural relations.
  • Develop coherent strategies for resolving differences that threaten the security and well-being of all peoples.

Public AcademyJust and Sustainable Societies, Policies, and Practices

Every society must address social and environmental challenges while trying to maintain or improve the quality of life of its members. The success of efforts to promote social justice and sustainability depends on:

  1. Understanding the personal, social, and historical contexts that maintain barriers to equity and sustainability, and
  2. Choosing technical innovations that consider equity and sustainability as fundamental specifications.

Scholars in the College of Liberal Arts study human–environmental interaction in context, and they promote the development of policies, practices, and technologies that prize equity and social justice and are sustainable in terms of resource consumption.

Health and Well-beingSocial, Cultural, and Psychological Impacts on Human Health

Many of the important factors in maintaining human health are related to socioeconomic conditions, individual behaviors, culture, communication, and access to healthcare. These factors, in conjunction with genetic risks and environmental hazards, can have profound effects on physical health, human productivity, and the quality of life.

Researchers in the College of Liberal Arts are exploring specific mechanisms by which social, cultural, and psychological factors are related to disease states, substance abuse, and other threats to health and well-being. Relevant scholarship in the college spans the range from studies of individual behavior to health knowledge and communication among groups and across societies.

"Within the world of escalating change, the College of Liberal Arts enhances and connects our lives, our educational endeavors, and our society through the examination of who we are, how we interact, and what we create."
