The Program in American Studies graduate faculty have contributed greatly to a rich array of intellectual fields. Cumulatively, the Program in American Studies faculty have published dozens of books and many hundreds of scholarly articles and reviews. Some have also published award-winning poetry and fiction. A large number of our faculty are working the terrain of critical popular culture and sports studies, examining in particular intersections of race, class, gender and empire.
Several Program in American Studies faculty members are making major contributions to the multiracial and feminist rewriting of the history of the American West.
The emerging field of environmental justice cultural studies has in great measure been defined by faculty and graduate students in our program.
Faculty are also doing groundbreaking work in other areas of gender/sexuality and ethnic studies, including rich new comparative work crossing not only ethnic but national boundaries as the limited notion of "American" studies is challenged from global perspectives.
Social movements, the prison industrial complex, labor history, critical anaylsis of digital or new media cultures, cultural theory, and decolonial studies, are also areas with strong concentrations of faculty and student research.
